Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Concept Key Operations Example
Fractions Addition/Subtraction: Common denominator
Multiplication: Multiply numerators & denominators
Division: Multiply by reciprocal
1/4 + 3/8 = 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8
Decimals Add/Subtract: Align decimals
Multiply: Multiply as whole numbers, then place decimal
Divide: Move decimal in divisor
3.14 + 2.5 = 5.64
Percentages To decimal: Divide by 100
To fraction: Write over 100, simplify
Percentage of number: Multiply by decimal equivalent
Percentage change: (Change ÷ Original) × 100
15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12

Ratios and Proportions

Ratios

  • Comparison of quantities (3:4, 3 to 4, or 3/4)
  • Should be simplified to lowest terms
  • Can be scaled up or down proportionally

Proportions

  • Equation stating two ratios are equal
  • Solved using cross-multiplication: a/b = c/d → ad = bc
  • Direct proportion: Both quantities increase together
  • Inverse proportion: One increases as other decreases

3. Addition and subtraction left to right: 4 + 15 - 4 = 15

Answer: 15

A store offers 15% discount on a $80 jacket. What is the sale price?

Solution:

1. Discount amount = 15% of $80 = 0.15 × 80 = $12

2. Sale price = Original price - Discount = $80 - $12 = $68

Answer: $68

The ratio of boys to girls is 3:5. If there are 24 boys, how many girls are there?

Solution:

1. Set up proportion: 3/5 = 24/x

2. Cross multiply: 3x = 5 × 24

3. Solve: 3x = 120 → x = 40

Answer: 40 girls

A car travels at 65 mph. How far in 3 hours 45 minutes?

Solution:

1. Convert time: 3h 45m = 3 + 45/60 = 3.75 hours

2. Distance = Rate × Time = 65 × 3.75 = 243.75 miles

Answer: 243.75 miles

John paints a fence in 6 hours, Mary in 4 hours. How long together?

Solution:

1. John's rate: 1/6 fence/hour

2. Mary's rate: 1/4 fence/hour

3. Combined rate: 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12 fence/hour

4. Time = 1 ÷ (5/12) = 12/5 = 2.4 hours (2h 24m)

Answer: 2.4 hours

Mix 25% salt solution with 10L of 40% to get 30% solution. How much 25% solution?

Solution:

1. Let x = amount of 25% solution

2. Equation: 0.25x + 0.40(10) = 0.30(x + 10)

3. Solve: 0.25x + 4 = 0.30x + 3

4. Rearrange: 4 - 3 = 0.30x - 0.25x → 1 = 0.05x → x = 20

Answer: 20 liters

Solve for x: 3(x - 2) = 2x + 7

Solution:

1. Distribute: 3x - 6 = 2x + 7

2. Subtract 2x: x - 6 = 7

3. Add 6: x = 13

Answer: x = 13
